Principal's Research Seminar: '100 Years after the Versailles Treaty: what we have learned (and forgotten)'
This term's seminar will be delivered by Professor Catherine Schenk, Professor of Economic and Social History. The title of the seminar is:
'100 Years after the Versailles Treaty: what we have learned (and forgotten)'
The Peace Conference at Versailles in 1919 set the foundations for the economic crises of the interwar period and the renewed European conflict twenty years later. As a young economist John Maynard Keynes left the conference and wrote a best-selling critique of economic diplomacy. 100 years on, as we seem on the precipice of a renewed retreat into economic nationalism, this paper examines the Versailles conference through Keynes' eyes to see how his critique might have lessons for us today.
The seminar will be followed by drinks in the Senior Common Room.
Guest Night will follow the seminar.
