Lee Hysan Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship in Biological, Medical or Physical Sciences
St Hilda’s College Oxford intends to elect a full-time Lee Hysan Stipendiary Junior Research Fellow for a period of three years from 1 October 2020 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The person appointed will be expected to undertake advanced research in Biological, Medical or Physical Sciences and the Fellowship is open to those who will have completed a PhD/DPhil at the time of taking up the post.
Junior Research Fellows play an important part in the intellectual and social life of the College and such Fellowships are designed to support academics in the early stages of their careers while at the same time achieving the College’s goals in terms of outreach and fair access. The majority of the Lee Hysan JRF’s time will be devoted to research and publication in their chosen academic field with up to 5% to outreach. They will be expected to self-manage their holiday and to take any holiday days outside of term time. They may be required to act as a College Adviser for graduate students and may be offered a limited amount of teaching (up to 3 hours a week during term time), in the interest of their career development. Any such teaching will be remunerated separately.
Applicants may be working in one of the following research areas: Biological, Medical or Physical Sciences. If the research project is laboratory based, candidates must provide a letter of support from the host department confirming that laboratory space can be provided without cost to the College. The primary duty of the post is to carry out research; in addition to the potential supervision within the Department, the JRF will receive additional academic mentoring by a College Fellow. A previous holder of this JRF is Dr Tingting Zhu.
The primary criterion for appointment to the Junior Research Fellowship will be research excellence. Candidates must:
(i) have an excellent educational record; the successful candidate must have a good Honours degree (either First or 2:1), or for EU/international applicants a qualification equivalent to a good Honours degree;
(ii) have submitted their doctoral thesis since 1 October 2018;
(iii) have research expertise in their chosen field as demonstrated by a completed doctoral thesis and/or published articles in refereed journals, as relevant to the candidate’s field; or promise of such achievement;
(iv) have the ability to present research findings effectively to fellow professionals at national and international conferences or in professional research seminars;
(v) have a coherent plan of research for the duration of the Fellowship which can either be the further development of the doctoral work or an entirely new area and which promises to make a valuable contribution to the candidate’s field;
(vi) have not already held a comparable career development appointment at Oxford or another university.
The stipend will start at Grade 7, point 1, which is £32,817 per annum and is pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme.
The Fellow will be provided with use of a shared office in College. Fellows are entitled to free meals, are members of the Senior Common Room, and may apply for research expenses (currently up to £1,800 per annum). They will also be eligible to apply for small project and event grants through the College’s Research Committee.
